From January 2025,  Access Canberra has introduced a 12-month trial of Convo Access at its service centres, making it easier for customers to communicate in the way that suits them best.

With a quick scan of a QR code, visitors can instantly connect to an Auslan interpreter via video call—no app downloads, no fees, just seamless support.

Government’s commitment to inclusivity and community collaboration

Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne, highlighted how this initiative enhances Access Canberra’s existing accessibility services, which include the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative, language support, bookable appointments, and a dedicated quiet hour each week.

“We’re always looking for ways to make government services more inclusive, working alongside the community to improve access,” Minister Cheyne said.

“This new service has the potential to make everyday interactions with government services much more inclusive and supportive for so many in our community.”

Todd Wright, CEO of Convo Australia, shared his enthusiasm: “This partnership is a game-changer for the Deaf community in the ACT. Convo Access gives people the ability to connect with government services independently and confidently, with immediate access to Auslan interpreting. It’s a powerful example of how technology can drive inclusion.”

DeafACT’s longstanding advocacy for equal access

For years, DeafACT has been advocating for equal access to essential services, ensuring the Deaf community can complete everyday tasks—like paying fines or updating registrations—without unnecessary barriers.

Louise Irvine, Secretary of DeafACT, explained: “For people who use Auslan, having on-demand video interpreting at Access Canberra is a big step forward. Written English isn’t always the best option for some Auslan users, so this service makes communication much more comfortable.”
