The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has partnered with Convo to provide greater accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing voters at the 2025 federal election in voting centres across Australia. Convo Access is an on-demand Auslan interpreting service available on your phone, and will allow people to connect directly with the AEC to ask questions and receive support during the voting process.

Since 2022, the AEC and Convo have worked together to reduce communication barriers and make voting more inclusive. Convo Access helps ease the stress of election day by ensuring clear, supportive communication and education about voting.

Reducing stress for voters

The voting process can feel overwhelming for many Deaf and hard of hearing voters, and not knowing how to communicate with staff can add extra pressure. Convo Access removes that stress, giving Deaf and hard of hearing voters instant access to an Auslan interpreter so they can chat with AEC staff and get the information they need—clearly and confidently.

Commitment to neutrality

During elections, neutrality is essential. Convo staff are trained to facilitate communication while remaining completely impartial. Their role is to ensure Deaf and hard of hearing voters can confidently participate in the process without pressure or influence. This commitment to neutrality fosters a fair, accessible, and supportive voting environment.

A step towards inclusivity

By offering Convo Access at voting centres, the AEC is reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity. This partnership ensures that every Australian, regardless of hearing ability, has equal access to the voting process. It also sets a strong precedent for future accessibility initiatives, helping to build a more inclusive democracy.

Because we understand you.
