Making elections more accessible with Convo and the AEC
16 April 2025

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) partnered with Convo to improve accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing voters during the 2025 federal election at voting centres across Australia. Convo Access is an on-demand Auslan interpreting service available on mobile phones. During the election, it enabled voters to connect directly with the AEC to ask questions and receive support throughout the voting process.
Since 2022, the AEC and Convo have worked together to reduce communication barriers and make voting more inclusive. In 2025, Convo Access helped ease the stress of election day by ensuring clear, supportive communication and access to information.
Reducing stress for voters
For many Deaf and hard of hearing voters, the voting process can feel overwhelming — especially when it’s unclear how to communicate with staff. Convo Access addressed this challenge by providing instant access to an Auslan interpreter, enabling voters to engage confidently and ask questions as needed.
Commitment to neutrality
Neutrality is essential during elections. Convo staff were trained to facilitate communication while remaining completely impartial. Their role was to ensure Deaf and hard of hearing voters could participate fully without pressure or influence. This commitment supported a fair, respectful, and accessible voting environment.
A step towards inclusivity
By offering Convo Access at voting centres, the AEC reinforced its commitment to inclusive electoral participation. This partnership demonstrated how thoughtful accessibility initiatives can ensure every Australian, regardless of hearing ability, is supported to vote with confidence setting a strong precedent for future elections.
